Kapi Terms of Use
Version 1.1 · Last updated: 7 September 2026

In short: Kapi is a kanji study app you licence, not buy. Kapi Pro is an auto-renewing subscription handled by Apple. Use the app decently, and know that the dictionary data inside comes from open projects we credit below.
1. Who you are dealing with
Kapi is made and operated by Zarif Raiyan Arefeen ("we", "us"), New South Wales, Australia. Contact: zarif.arefein@gmail.com.
These terms are a binding agreement between you and us about the Kapi iOS app, its widgets, and this website. By downloading, installing or using Kapi you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not use Kapi.
Apple's standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement governs your licence to this third-party app between you and us as the application provider. These terms supplement that agreement; they do not replace it or reduce rights it or applicable law gives you. If a supplemental term conflicts with that agreement, the standard agreement controls. Apple's separate terms govern your use of the App Store and payment services.
2. Who can use Kapi
Kapi is intended for adult learners. You must have legal capacity to enter this agreement. If you are a minor under the law where you live, a parent or guardian must authorise your use and purchases where required. This clause does not replace any local child-privacy or consumer protection rule.
3. Your licence
Your licence is governed by Apple's standard EULA and applicable App Store usage rules, including any permitted sharing rights. Kapi's own code and artwork are licensed, not sold. Third-party data has the separate rights described in section 12; these terms do not restrict those rights. You retain rights in your own study progress.
4. What you must not do
- Copy, sell, rent, sublicense or redistribute the app except as permitted by the standard EULA, applicable law or the separate open licences in section 12.
- Reverse-engineer, decompile or try to extract the source code, except where the law gives you that right regardless of this clause.
- Use bots, scripts or automated tools against the app or the website.
- Remove or hide any copyright, licence or credit notice.
- Use Kapi to break any law, or in a way that harms us, Apple, or other people.
- Pretend to be us, or claim Kapi is yours, in a store listing, a website or a social-media account.
5. Accounts and your data
Kapi has no accounts. Nothing to sign up for, nothing to log in to.
Your learning history stays on your device. Settings → Reset all progress clears learning history but keeps preferences, onboarding state and purchase access. It does not cancel a subscription or delete remote purchase records. Deleting or offloading the app has the effects described in the Privacy Policy, including any device backups you control.
Apple and RevenueCat process purchase information; support correspondence is also held outside the device. For access or deletion requests, email zarif.arefein@gmail.com. Use Copy purchase ID for a purchase-record request. We respond normally within 30 days, subject to applicable legal requirements and exceptions; the Privacy Policy explains verification, retention and record recreation after a restore.
6. Kapi Pro: the subscription
Kapi Pro is required to use the app after onboarding. It is sold through Apple as an auto-renewing subscription, in two lengths. Prices are shown in the app, in your local currency, before you buy.
- Yearly. Eligible users get a 3-day free trial; when the trial ends you are charged the yearly price unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends.
- Monthly. No trial.
For both:
- Apple charges the price shown when you confirm, except for an eligible free trial. For the yearly free trial, payment is due when the trial ends unless you cancel in time.
- The subscription renews automatically for the chosen period at the renewal price shown by Apple unless you turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Apple handles notices and any required consent for price changes.
- Cancel any time in your iPhone's Settings → your name → Subscriptions, or through "Manage subscription" in Kapi. Cancelling stops the next charge; you keep Pro until the period you paid for ends. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
- Refunds: use Apple's refund process for App Store billing requests. Contact us as well if the app does not work as promised. This does not limit any remedy or responsibility under applicable consumer law.
- Any unused part of a free trial is lost when you buy a subscription.
- A price change will be shown to you by Apple before it takes effect, and you can cancel before it does.
Restore purchases in Kapi brings Pro back on a new phone signed into the same Apple ID.
7. What Kapi is, and is not
Kapi teaches kanji from public dictionary data. We work hard to keep it right but cannot promise every reading, meaning, word or sentence is correct or fits every context. It is a study aid, not a certification, not exam preparation, and not a substitute for a teacher. We make no promise about how much you will learn or how fast. Use "Report a mistake" in Settings when you find one.
Kapi is provided "as is" and "as available". To the extent the law allows, we make no promises that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or fit for a particular purpose.
8. Changes to the app
We may update Kapi and its supported devices. Material changes affecting a paid service remain subject to your contractual and consumer rights. If we discontinue the service, we will provide notice where required, stop offering renewals and explain cancellation and available remedies for undelivered paid access. Some features depend on iOS versions or devices we do not control.
9. Feedback
If you send us an idea, correction or suggestion, you permit us to use that feedback to improve Kapi. We do not acquire ownership of your personal information or remove attribution required by a third-party licence. We will not use your name in marketing without permission.
10. Liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect losses, lost data, lost profits or lost study time from using Kapi. Our total liability to you for anything arising from Kapi is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim or A$100.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that the law does not allow to be limited, such as for death, personal injury, or fraud, and nothing removes rights consumer law gives you that cannot be waived. If you live in Australia, our goods and services come with guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law that cannot be excluded. If you live in the EU, UK or another place with such rights, you keep them.
11. Ending things
You can stop using Kapi at any time by deleting it; cancel any subscription separately (section 6). We can end your licence if you break these terms. Your Apple purchase rights are governed by Apple's terms. Sections 7, 9, 10, 12 and 13 survive the end of these terms.
12. Credits and open licences
Kapi uses the following open data. Their permissions continue to apply independently of these app terms; no endorsement by the contributors is implied.
- KANJIDIC2 and JMdict: copyright James William Breen and the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group. Readings, meanings and example-word data are used under EDRDG's licence, CC BY-SA 4.0. KANJIDIC documentation; JMdict documentation.
- KRADFILE: copyright James William Breen and EDRDG; character decomposition under the same EDRDG licence, CC BY-SA 4.0.
- Tatoeba sentences and translations: contributed by the individual authors credited with the sentence data, under CC BY 2.0 France. Tatoeba is the source; the bilingual selection is from ManyThings.org/anki, by Charles Kelly. The sentence credits retain source IDs and contributor names for the Japanese and English text. System text-to-speech is used; no Tatoeba audio recording is included.
- KanjiVG: copyright 2009–2026 Ulrich Apel. Stroke data is adapted from KanjiVG under CC BY-SA 3.0.
- kanji-data: copyright 2019 David Gouveia. JLPT levels are taken from kanji-data, under the MIT licence reproduced below.
- RevenueCat Purchases iOS: copyright 2024 RevenueCat, Inc. Purchase software from purchases-ios, under the MIT licence reproduced below.
Kapi selects and normalises dictionary readings and example words, normalises KRADFILE components, filters and annotates sentences, and converts KanjiVG SVG paths into drawing coordinates. These are adaptations of the identified sources. The relevant adapted data retains the stated open licence; the app's proprietary code and artwork do not change that. The open-data permissions do not grant rights to Kapi's name or branding.
13. Apple
The standard EULA includes terms concerning Apple. In particular:
- These terms are between you and us, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for Kapi or its content.
- Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for Kapi.
- If Kapi fails to meet a warranty that applies, you may tell Apple and Apple will refund the purchase price to you. Beyond that, Apple has no warranty obligation for Kapi.
- Apple is not responsible for any claim relating to Kapi, including product liability, consumer protection, or intellectual-property claims. Those are ours to handle.
- You confirm you are not in a country under a U.S. government embargo and are not on any U.S. government list of prohibited parties.
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.
14. Social media and the website
We advertise and post about Kapi on TikTok, Instagram and other platforms. Those accounts are ours; the platforms are not. Anything you post there is governed by that platform's own terms, and public comments may be seen by anyone. We may reply, hide or report comments that break a platform's rules. Screenshots and videos in our marketing show the app as it was when recorded; features and prices can change.
15. Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of New South Wales, Australia, and disputes go to its courts. If you are a consumer in the EU, UK or another place whose law gives you the right to use the courts of the place you live, you keep that right, and any mandatory consumer law of your country applies.
16. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The version and the date at the top change, and for anything that affects your rights or your money we tell you in the app before it applies. Continuing to use Kapi after that is accepting the new terms. Old versions are available on request.
17. The small print
If any part of these terms is found invalid, the rest still applies. These supplemental terms, Apple's standard EULA and applicable purchase terms describe the agreement for Kapi; the Privacy Policy explains information handling. If we do not enforce a clause once, we can still enforce it later. You cannot transfer these terms to someone else; we can transfer them to whoever takes over Kapi, and we will tell you if that happens.
